Homeschool Highlights: December Edition

December brought fun, challenges, and a nice long break to our homeschool group. We took off the same days that Addison's school did, and it was much needed.

We went to a chilly outdoor dramatic retelling of Dickens's A Christmas Carol.


Donated our Turkey Trot money to the United Way.

Leah crushed some tricky pentomino puzzles.


Bryn threw the party of the year for her fish.



Very impressive coloring by Asa.

The kids helped me make ornaments for my Primary class.


Emmie loves glitter.


We learned about the circulatory system. The way the veins and arteries enter and exit the heart is truly incredible.


We made labeled playdoh models of brains.


Made a working model of the digestive system. Eww.

Teamed up with some neighbors to take some Christmas cheer to a rest home.


Had a fancy tea party with the neighbors to compliment our study of England.

Leah made some pop-up cards.

These guys are always looking for creative ways to occupy Little Lady when it's their turn to play with her. Asa's fort + gingerbread house snack was a winner.

Made Christmas ornaments.

Oh my goodness there are so many amazing things about this! you are all so smart and learning so much about so many things! Asa's coloring is so impressive, and speaking of coloring, did Bryn draw that picture of Ben? The one that is enlarged to show detail? Because WOW! I love the pop up cards, and the thank you notes to the mail lady, and everything about this! You guys are BUSY!

Throughout our married life, Michelle and I have pointed out things that show we are "established." The day we got a bed frame, instead of just having a mattress on the floor, was a big one. And the day we bought our first shovel. The last major one was probably at Christmas, when we finally strung lights from the top of the house instead of just in the windows. Well, it's time to put a big, fat check in another "established" box - the one labeled Chickens. Yes, we are now the proud and clueless owners of a chicken coop, chicken run, and six chicks. From the way we latch onto nostalgic back-to-the-farm ways, you can tell that Michelle and I are both several generations removed from actually having to survive off the family farm. Tide Pools and Big Trees Days 1-3

By the end of last school year, one thing was painfully apparent: we needed a vacation. We were all beyond burned out. So Nate worked his magic and combined our hopes and dreams into one amazing, unforgettable trip. We drove to northern California to see the redwoods and go to the beach in search of tide pools. We stayed in the perfect little vacation rental by a river full of tadpoles and spent our days exploring and our nights hot tubbing. Our only regret is not staying for longer. (And that one time that Bryn threw up all over the car . . .) Here are some pictures of our amazing trip, which we named, "Tide Pools and Big Trees." We did lots of driving through the desert. This was the highlight of the first day's journey, the "Tree of Utah." Nate stayed up real late making these amazing landmark maps for the kids to follow along with. Michelle's Side of the Family Comes to Town

A couple weeks ago, Jenna received her endowment. What a special event in our family! The way schedules worked out, it made the most sense to do it here, in the Bountiful Temple. So we got to have tons of my family in town, which is a rare and most delicious treat. Jenna and Preston came, of course, and Brianna and Mason, Mom and Dad, and Rebecca and her brand new baby, Austin. It was a house full of fun!  It was a very fast visit, but it was just wonderful.  The first day we got to have Bri and Beck and Austin tag along to ballet and the grocery store, and then we decided that we'd better go to lunch at Zupas. From there it's all a blur, but more people came, we hung out, stayed up way too late, got to show off our new house, and generally had the time of our lives.
