Running Camp

One of our good friends is an amazing, record-breaking sort of runner. For the past couple summers she's been doing a running camp for kids. This year Addison was old enough to go, and after much careful consideration, he decided he was game to give it a shot. Nate and I thought it would be good for him to do something hard and sweaty and also to practice being a good sport.

We went to practice twice a week, and it was conveniently located at the coolest park in the world. It's like space camp, man! All sorts of spinny, high, insane toys that I thought had been universally outlawed by the time I hit the age of ten or so. The three younger kids enjoyed the mornings we spent there, and therefore, so did I.

The big race was last Saturday. A one-mile race at Clinton Days. We caught wind of the fact that it was a super hero-themed race, and that the kids could wear costumes. The boy was thrilled, and had very big plans. Luckily, my mom is a genius, and Addison is seven, so he felt like the actual Superman when I presented him with a masking tape "S" on his blue shirt, and a red cape made from an old race shirt of mine. And a mask to top it off. He practiced running at top speed around the backyard the afternoon before.

Addison had to report bright and early at 7:00 the day of the race. He was so pumped. Nate took him over to warm up and prep with his team, and the other kids and I just barely made it by 7:30 when the race started.

Getting his wristband on.

At the starting line. There were probably around thirty kids racing. You can sort of see Addison's nose right in the middle there.  That child took off so fast! It was obvious that he was running on serious amounts of adrenaline.

During the race. They were having blueberry muffins for breakfast.

Mid-race. You'll notice that both feet are completely off the ground. He can fly!

The finish line is in sight!

Flying!

He did it! We didn't time him, but I'd say he was easily under ten minutes. He was sixth overall, and felt like a million bucks.

With his teammates and coaches. Addison was thrilled that his two best running camp friends got first and second.

We're so proud of his great race, but even more proud of the way he handled the competition. He did it with great class. Good job, buddy.
